Host

The University of Liverpool was one of the first civic universities. Founded in 1881 with the establishment of University College Liverpool, the College opened in 1882 with 45 students on Brownlow Hill. Today, the University has over 230 first-degree courses offered across 103 subjects, over 19,000 registered students and an annual income of �219 million, which includes �75 million for research. The University remains strongly committed through the teaching and research of its staff to the 'advancement of learning and ennoblement of life' which the people of Liverpool helped establish over a century ago.

In 2008 the city of Liverpool is the European Capital of Culture, leading to major infrastructure improvements and a large programme of cultural events. The Department of Engineering is currently undergoing a �35 million improvement in its facilities for teaching and research, due for completion in 2008. The CFD Laboratory in the Department of Engineering is a major centre of research into transonic aeroelasticity, unsteady aerodynamics and rotorcraft aerodynamics.

Venue

The workshop will be held on the main campus of the University of Liverpool (see maps) at the Foresight Centre .

Travel

Liverpool city centre is about 30 miles from Manchester Airport (which is a major international airport). You can take the Airport taxi to Liverpool (cost approximately �70 one way - 45 mins, see the kiosk in the arrivals hall), or the train direct to Liverpool Lime St (cost approximately �15 return - 75 mins).

The city centre is 6 miles from Liverpool Airport (a small airport served by budget airlines). You take the number 500 bus to Liverpool city centre - �3 one way - or a taxi which should cost about �10 one way.

Alternatively, if you fly to London, then the train to Liverpool Lime St (3 hours on Virgin Trains from London Euston) is particularly comfortable. Advanced booking will give you substantial savings compared with buying a ticket on the day.

Hotels

The hotels are grouped into 3 areas. There are 3 very close to Lime St Station, which is centrally located near the main shopping street. The university is about half a mile up the hill from these hotels. There are 2 hotels near the university - the Feathers is cheaper and the Hope St Hotel is the most expensive. Going away from the University from Lime St, the Albert Dock area is the most attractive in Liverpool, with docks redeveloped for upscale housing, restaurants and the famous Victorian era buildings (eg the Liver Building), all next to the river Mersey. These hotels are about one mile from the university, and half a mile from Lime St station.

Note that a minibus will be arranged to and from the Albert Dock area at the start and end of the programme on each day. The assemby point for this bus will be the Malmaison Hotel lobby at 0830 on each day. Also, there is a list of University of Liverpool corporate rates at some hotels which may be available.
